WASHINGTON -- Some married couples would pay thousands of dollars more for the same health insurance coverage as unmarried people living together, under the health insurance overhaul plan pending in Congress.

The built-in "marriage penalty" in both House and Senate healthcare bills has received scant attention. But for scores of low-income and middle-income couples, it could mean a hike of $2,000 or more in annual insurance premiums the moment they say "I do."

The disparity comes about in part because subsidies for purchasing health insurance under the plan from congressional Democrats are pegged to federal poverty guidelines. That has the effect of limiting subsidies for married couples with a combined income, compared to if the individuals are single.

The End of My Birthday Month

My Favorite Season!

I am back and ready to get caught up on my blogging. But I missed the beginning of my Birthday month by showing you how I intend to celebrate the end. I can't wait to make these cupcakes. Of course I have to start now and try them out so I can perfect a fresh batch for Halloween!
I found the recipe at one of my favorite blog sites: Love and Olive Oil
With many thanks here is the recipe:

The mummies are simply, basic strips of frosting piped on with a flat tip. The sugar eyes are something I’ve been looking for. The blog suggests to can find them in white, as well as multi color and jumbo size at Bake it Pretty. I am not a soymilk lover in baking ssssssoooooo I will probably use whole milk or at least 2% organic.

In the meantime, if you see canned pumpkin, stock up. Believe it or not, there is a world shortage this year. Make sure you have plenty to make it through all the holidays until the supply is back to normal. I was in Costco Saturday and it looks like they have increased the size of their pumpkin pies for the season. Go figure. Yum!

Pumpkin Chip Cupcakes with Brown Sugar Buttercream

Makes 1 dozen cupcakes.

Ingredients
Cupcakes:
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/3 cup oil
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup soymilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon each ground cloves, nutmeg, and ginger
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Frosting:
2 large egg whites
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into tablespoons

Directions
Preheat oven to 350?F. Line muffin pan with cupcake liners.

In a medium bowl, stir together pumpkin, oil, sugar, soymilk, and vanilla. Sift in the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices. Gently whisk by hand until just combined, don’t use an electric mixer or overmix the batter as it may become too gummy. Once combined, fold in the chocolate chips.

Fill liners with 1/4 cup batter (cups should be approximately 2/3 full). Bake for 22 to 24 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely before frosting.

For frosting, in a heatproof bowl set over (not in) a pan of simmering water, whisk together egg whites, sugar, and salt. Cook, whisking constantly, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is warm to the touch. Transfer to the clean bowl of an electric mixer. Beat on medium speed until fluffy and cooled, about 15 minutes. Raise speed to high; beat until stiff peaks form. Reduce speed to medium-low; add butter, 2 to 3 tablespoons at a time, until fully incorporated. Spread or pipe onto cooled cupcakes.

Obama Takes Part in Wedding Slideshow

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Many couples show slideshows at their wedding. But the one shown at Ben Popik and Joanna Hutko's affair featured one very special guest.

The couple, who branded their wedding as "totally sweet" on their Web site , clearly have a sense of humor -- they chose to get married at an aquarium in New Jersey and stated that people's kids were welcome to come, but "in the second half of the evening, children will be put into the shark tank for the amusement of the other guests."

The couple asked members of their wedding party to take on various responsibilities and designated groomsman Adam Conover to create a wedding slideshow. But his task came with specific instructions -- "We want our slideshow to be different. You can do whatever you like, and I won’t ever try to approve it," Conover recalled Popik saying .

What resulted was a unique slideshow that featured photos with an unexpected friend -- President Obama.

Congratulations! You have become a bride (not bride-to be). You are engaged. What to do next? Here is a little cheat sheet to help you start your wonderful journey towards your nuptials.

First, spread the news! Make sure you tell your parents first and close friends so there is no chance for them to hear it elsewhere.

Get a manicure. If everyone is going to be looking at your hand, make sure it looks great.
Gather the parents together if they don’t already know each other. Let them have a chance to size up each family. Listen for expectations for your wedding. Not necessary to voice opinions at this early stage of the game. Make sure you are prepared and pick your battles wisely. Not everything is worth it.

Curtis Whipple, BS

Judy, Bobbie and I had the best time yesterday watching our friend Curtis Whipple receive his diploma at The University of Phoenix Commencement held at the University of Phoenix Stadium. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Many of you know Curtis as the new coordinator of the Wedding and Event Network here in The Phoenix Area. He is also the President of the American Disc Jockey Association Phoenix Chapter.

If you haven't met Curtis, you have missed out. Bright, funny and a bit whacked (in a good way); he plays the piano, guitar, sings and is one of the most popular and professional disc jockeys in the valley. I am proud to call him my friend.

Congratulations Curtis! Job well done.

How Much Liquor Should I Buy for My Wedding?

As more of our brides try to shave expenses, new pieces of information need to come to the forefront. One of the largest if you are having it at home is "how much liquor should I buy?" As a responsible journalist I must first warn you that you are taking a major liability on yourself and your parents if you provide this on your own. Things happen and it would be awful if you lost a guest on the way home because you didn't know how to say no more.

The best course to follow is to hire a professional bar tending company like Black Tie Events or Pourmasters. All their bartenders have TIPS Alcohol Certification and the Arizona Food Handlers Card. I know these companies personally and can highly recommend their services be it just bar tending, complete bar services or just to sell you the liquor.

But if you are sure you don't need outside services, I have found a nifty little calculator to give you a rough idea about the amount of liquor you should buy for a wedding. I found it on one of my favorite sites REAL SIMPLE. They have set it up by time of day, number of guests and whether you are serving a full bar or just wine, beer and champaign. You can find it here and may your wedding be joyous and safe.

Tips for Getting your Wedding on TV

Platinum Weddings Sunday, April 19th Episode is featuring a wedding featured in The Wedding Chronicle. Summer Degado and Matt Gehrke were married at The Four Seasons, Scottsdale at Troon North June 21, 2008.

Photographers were Katrina Wall ace and Andrew Mejia and edited Hollye Schumacher. Amy Vandervort was the coordinator. The gorgeous flowers were provided The Flower Studio and Petal Pusher. Ray the DJ was present. The Spin was one of the live bands for the affair.

Tri-Rentals and Kool Party Rentals provide much of the splendid decor. My friend Doug Johnston, Avant Garde Limousines coordinated all the transportation. I can't wait for the show.

I recently expanded my cable selections in my office due to the superabundance of wedding shows. I can almost watch a wedding program every hour of the day. Unfortunately, my favorite show "Platinum Weddings" on WeTV shows at 11:00pm on Sunday nights here in Phoenix. I am either too tired from the weekend or I manage to stay up for a couple of episodes and am cranky all Monday from lack of sleep. These are the top weddings with budgets over $100,000 and some go into the millions. I love the ideas, love the professionalism of the planners and love the fact that they usually don't portray the bridal party in a negative light.

Some other shows are WeTV's "Bridezillas," "Amazing Wedding Cakes," "My Fair Wedding" and "Rich Bride, Poor Bride" or TLC, home to "Say Yes to the Dress,""Get Married with Collin Cowie on Lifetime, and even "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?," on E!'s Style Network. Most of these can be seen in full episodes online as well.

Getting on some of these shows could offer you some services you might not normally afford but at what price? First, having your wedding selected is a lot like getting on a game show. You need to be very appealing! Having a good backstory (as it is referred to) meaning how you met. Did you postpone the wedding because your dog died and you were transported to Oz in a tornado? Great backstory!

Next, you have to fill out the questionaire very creatively! Send an scrapbook with all the questions answered with lots of visual embellishments. Send a video tape along with the questionaire. Do something creative and different to get noticed.

You have to succeed in the first two steps before you get to the Screen Test. Be obsessed or be crazy but above all be authentic in a high energy sort of way. Nothing is more boring than a groom that agrees with everything.

But be prepared to give up some of the control. You may not be able to pick the wedding date and when you do get a date the network can come tape, be ready to find a venue on short notice.
Be ready to have the worst of you and your friends and family portrayed. Although it doesn't always happen, it does make for good TV. The network controls all the footage. So don't say it, think it or do it if you don't want it aired. Be ready to be provoke for reactions also.

If all of this hasn't scared you away, you may be one of the lucky ones that is selected. You will get great video of your day. Your vendors may offer a little extra to show them off in the best light. And who knows, you may have something to share with your grandkids some day.

I can't wait for the show. Of course I will be cranky Monday morning.

Eyelash Extensions Go Big Time

Our beautiful new First Lady has found the secret any bride can easily attain. Semi-permanent eyelash extensions. These are available here in the valley but there are many different skill levels. To have good extensions discuss the length, the thickness and the color of each lash that will be applied. How quick drying is the glue they use? Ask to see a completed set if possible.

Your lash artist should want to know how you intend to wear your makeup on your wedding day. If you are going for a natural look, you may not want 16-18 mm thick black lashes. My preference ( I am an old lady) is a thinner 10mm-12mm lash. If I need a more dramatic look, I can add mascara. Great Lash by Mabeline is a water based mascara that goes on clean and more importantly comes off clean without hurting your lashes.

Your lashes should be glued on one lash to one lash. Any clumping can cause extra lashes to be pulled out prematurely. This is an operator skill as well as your ability to not leave before they are dried. My eyes are really sensitive so I will have red eyes the rest of the day. You cannot get them wet for 24 hours but then for me, after they are washed the sensitivity goes away.

They last on me about three weeks before I need them refreshed. That doesn't mean they all fall off. No, your lashes are in a continual state of growing and falling out. The cycle is about 6 weeks. So I always check when I see a lash has fallen out to see if my real lash is attached as it should be. I also rub my eyes in my sleep, so a set that can last 3 weeks has been out on well.

The cost of a full set in the valley is everywhere from $150.00 - $500.00. Cost does not imply skill. Refills should be in the $30-$50 range. Do your research. There is nothing better than having beautiful, flirty lashes.

Is it cheap to talk about cost savings?
I attended a great bridal show last Sunday and had the good fortune to speak with many brides and grooms. Two of my favorite bits of advice I often share with couples can be considered budget savers as well just great ways to do things.

First, is the issue of the cake. I had a chance a few years ago to share a cup of coffee with the Grand Dam of Cake, Sylvia Weinstock of New York. She convinced me that there is nothing sadder than seeing dozens of pieces of orphaned wedding cake drying on semi-empty tables throughout the reception site in the late evening. Makes you want to cry doesn’t it? To avoid this, Sylvia encourages her couples to taste the cake immediately so that while your guests are eating, the cake can be removed, cut and served immediately after the last course. It’s called dessert. No need to serve up other sweets. All that time you spent fretting over the Pistachio Viennese Meringue vs. the Chocolate Expresso Butter Crème will really be important because your guests will actually get to taste the cake. Budget Saver = No extra dessert.

Second, is the tradition of not seeing the bride before the ceremony. I will come back to how it can save your budget, but did you know in Medieval times, all marriages were arranged by family members and village elders. Just to make sure the groom didn’t run for the border before the whole deal was finished, they put a veil over her head and plopped a bouquet of fragrant flowers in front of her so she wouldn’t smell. Then as soon as the I Do’s were done, the groom could see what he had just signed up for. Is that a tradition you want to respect? Also if you have the pictures of the two of you taken before the wedding, your make-up is perfect. You haven’t cried yet. You get some special time to remember why you are doing all this and the pictures are always better, free of distraction. You then won’t take as long doing family pictures after the ceremony. Budget Saver = Your guests won’t be able to drink or eat as much during the cocktail hour.

As you meet the vendors that will help transform your vision, be very frank. Ask them for ideas to help you save your budget. The quality vendors that advertise in The Wedding Chronicle will delight you. You see, they are not only savvy and sophisticated. They are very smart too.

In fact, I often wonder why brides always get a throw away from the florist for the bridal toss. As many of you know, my sister Judy is the editor of The Wedding Chronicle. As such, she does a lot of writing. For her birthday, I asked Barbara Gardner of Let Them Eat Cake to copy Earnest Hemmingway's Royal Typewriter found in his Key West home. She did a magnificent job don't you think? And it tasted as good as it looked.

Curtis Whipple, Amy Vandervort and families joined us at the Old Town Tortilla Factory, where Curtis serenaded Judy with a lively rendition of the Beatles "When I'm 64." I think she had a good time.

In 2002, DanceMotion Artistic Directors Kevin and Meri Bender were inspired to look for a new way to support our community through dance and that is how DancIn'spiration came to be.
Each year DanceMotion contacts elite dance companies throughout Arizona to stage this benefit show. Each participating dance company brings three numbers of varying genres: jazz, lyrical, tap, character, contemporary, and more. Besides DanceMotion, two other dance companies have been participating in DancIn'spiration since its inception, and all others have participated for at least two years. The waiting list of dance companies that want to get involved is long!

It's an exciting one-day event with the performers arriving early in the day to rehearse and stage the show and learn the 200 participant-wide closing number. The dancers have dinner in the theater and then get dressed and ready to hit the stage.

DancIn'spiration has raised $40,000 for local children's charities to date. Previous beneficiaries include the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Caitlin Robb Foundation which provided funds for children's cancer care and research, and Arizona Helping Hands a local charity that sponsors a "Christmas for the Homeless" and "Feed the Children" events.

It's Thee Bridal Show Season

Saturday Judy and Bobbie participated in a bridal show at the Hilton Garden Inn in Avondale. It was medium-sized show, but the enthusiasm and camaraderie made it fun for both the vendors AND the hundred and twenty or so brides who attended. One nice touch were the box lunches provided to the vendors for a nominal charge and prepared by West Valley Catering. West Valley Catering Company is a full service catering company based in Phoenix’s West Valley. Fresh, innovative cuisine is the foundation of Chef Cory Mingo’s philosophy. His roots planted in New Orleans, from the long line of chefs in his family. Everyone who wanted to get a quick and tasty bite, could get one without missing brides or paying an arm and a leg.

My best advice is to start with a meeting a professional wedding planner. Someone who can help you organize and someone with a list of wonderful vendors to recommend to you. Whether you plan had planned to use one or not, spend the money their services are invaluable. When was the last time you planned a $30,000 event? Not spending that much this year because of the economy and other considerations? Let’s try $10,000 for your event. Do you know what plus-plus means on a banquet BEO? How about what size linen on a 60 inch round and what size should the overlay be? Did I get your attention?

Paying for a consultation with a professional planner is essential. You are there to work not just talk about your ring. You need help to get started. It is worth the money. If you really click, consider hiring her (or him) to help you more. A consultant can save you money and oh, so much stress, can get extras added to service contracts or discounts from reliable vendors. A good planner will make sure you don’t waste a dollar.

We have several in this issue of The Wedding Chronicle you can trust. And they are diverse. A lot of them routinely plan weddings for the six figure crowd. But there are many others who care just as much for the small intimate ceremony or the destination wedding. Start the year off making smart decisions. You won’t be sorry.

Are you a aggressive recession advertiser?

In a study of 600 businesses, McGraw Hill Research found businesses that maintained or increased their advertising expenditures during the 1981-1982 recession, averaged higher sales growth during the recession and in the three years following. By 1985, sales of aggressive recession advertisers (those that either maintain or increased spending) had risen 256% over those that cut-back on advertising. Likewise, in 2001, another study found aggressive recession advertisers increased market share 2 1/2 times the average for all businesses in the post-recession economy.

In 2002, the Strategic Planning Institute illustrated, in contrast, during economic expansion, because 80% of businesses increased their advertising spending, there was no improvement in market share. The reason? Because everyone had increased spending. Now is the time to increase advertising, not cut it back.

WHEN A LIVE BAND – REALLY ISN’T!

We can't always use every article that is sent to The Wedding Chronicle. But sometimes the information is too good to pass up. Hence my GUEST BLOGGER today is Spencer Bass, a professional musician in the Phoenix area.

What image comes to mind when you think of a live band? Talented artists playing musical instruments and singing together? In the past, that would be an apt description. When the technology available today is utilized, “live” can be open to interpretation. How can you tell if the band you’re thinking of hiring uses high-tech devices to create their sound, rather than musicians? Today’s high-tech devices can do everything from imitate any type of musical instrument, to turning a weak singing voice into a strong one. Even adding chorus like harmonies!

A device with most potential for misuse is called a “sequencer”. When fully employed, professional musicians can be replaced by just about anyone acting like they’re playing an instrument. You may have already seen what you thought was a “live” band but was actually a staged act “lip-synching”! Remember Milli-Vanilli?

Legitimate musicians use such devices sparingly, so as not to fool the audience or damage their credibility. When the use of such devices is disclosed up front, there’s no problem. But frankly, this disclosure almost never happens and those who hire the band end up paying way too much for what they are actually receiving! Imagine purchasing what you thought was say, a genuine Rolex watch, only to find out later it’s a knock-off! The motivation for someone to “stage” a band utilizing a sequencer, rather than investing the time and money to produce a real “live” band is the same as anyone selling a counterfeit item, GREED! If your event calls for “live” music and you have never hired a band before, because of the burgeoning use of devices such as a “sequencer”, it is probably a good idea to seek professional advice or representation so the band you hire is actually “live”!

Our Annual Grooms Edition is Out

It's on the streets starting today, the Fifth Annual Grooms Edition of the Wedding Chronicle. A toast to grooms everywhere because without you... there would be no wedding. Oh, the power! I have been told that by the end of October, every groom in the Valley hates us. Because every bride has picked up this issue of the Chronicle and read it from cover to cover to make sure that all the articles reflect her side of the argument. She rips out the offending pages and hands it to her groom and saying, “Read this.”
We know this is not the preferred reading list for most gentlemen but let me give you the Cliff Note version of this issue. If you want to make your bride happy she said yes, early on choose the activities in which you wish to be involved and stay out of the rest. I know that’s easier said than done but Patti Zint, our fabulous writer, takes you through four easy steps to turn that Bridezilla back into the woman you love.

The Wedding Chronicle is such a unique publication, we know. People have asked me when are we going glossy like all the other magazines. The answer is no time soon. The benefits of a newspaper for our advertisers are many. The American Marketing Association points out the following:

Newspapers permit an advertiser to reach a large number of people within a specified geographical area.
The printed advertising message has both permanence and desired obsolescence. A reader can refer back to, or even clip and save, a particular ad, yet the next edition is new and fresh and as eagerly sought by the same reader.
The newspaper offers a predictable frequency of publication
Newspapers have immediacy. You can place an ad and within a few weeks be getting results. The frequency of publication permits quicker responses to changing market conditions.

Summer in the city is just a little bit hotter this year. Although delaying its arrival, I have lost count of the 110 plus degree days we are experiencing. One thing is for certain, it is costing us all a bit more to stay cool this summer.
There are things you can do to mitigate the heat and save a little money while planning your nuptials. I mean besides grabbing a margarita, heading to the pool and brainstorming. First grab some old issues of The Wedding Chronicle, fill a pitcher of margaritas then head to the pool. Many of you forget that in each issue we feature all NEW information and ideas. We don’t recycle content in different covers. Each issue from years past will have great ways to help you accomplish your goals with style and panache.
Do your idea grabbing and wedding research with all the available content of our publications and on our website; use the internet before you set out in the hot car. You know that thing that burns dollars faster these days than paper under a magnifying glass? Make your trips organized and few in number. You will be surprised how many vendors will meet with you in half hour segments at a nice cool coffee café to help you get your job done. Pick a place centrally located like the Tempe Marketplace or Desert Ridge Marketplace. It may be a long day but will probably save you money in the long run.
If you must visit their establishment, make your route efficient. Try on gowns at Mariée and then look for a plus sized mother-of-the-bride at Diva’s. Visit Gainey Suites for hotel accommodations or to have an intimate event right there. Next swing by Pretty Papers to choose your invitations, then up to Flora Europa for flowers and now back home again.
There are routes like this all over the city. Email me with what you are looking for and I can help you develop an itinerary for just about every part of the city. Just look at it as the ultimate commitment to the planet we share with you.

Winner - NACE Confections Competition

Winner of 3 awards at this years ELEMENTS Competition at the J.W. Marriott - Desert Ridge this year was my friend and advertiser Andrea Carusetta-Blaut of Sedona Cake Couture. On Monday, June 30th, she took 1st Place in the Vintage category, Best of Show (of all entries) and People's Choice Award (voted by the public that attended). This was the 2nd year in a row that she took these top 3 awards! Next year she will be a judge so that others can be so recognized.

Twenty of Arizona's finest cake artists competed. The themes were: traditional. contemporary, retro and vintage. Andrea chose Vintage. I don't have pictures of the other cakes yet but isn't Andrea's amazing. She saw an actual picture of this vase and recreated it in sugar. Those are not real flowers, they are SUGAR! For tasting she brought my favorite of her cakes the chocolate with espresso buttercream. Ummmmmmmmmm. And she is so thin!

My lovely friend Barbara Gardner of Let Them Eat Cake (also an advertiser) had two Kick Ass Cakes! They were also award winning but I don't have pictures of them... yet!

It was a fun evening and I hope to post pictures of the amazing tables as soon as I can get my hands on them. I also want to give a special shout to Connie Thiebault the coordinator extraordinaire of the J.W.Marriott - Desert Ridge. I don't see how she slept. The evening was flawless! Thanks... Oh how I hate my job! (not)

What Inspires Me... Daniel Ost

Best Fish I Have Ever Eaten

I must qualify this statement by saying I usually hate fish. (I love food just hate fish!) For me, it can't look like a fish, have any body parts on it including skin and above all else smell like a fish. Do not take me to a crab shack with newspaper, mallets and buckets. Uh-uh. But the fish I ate was the Grilled Alaskan halibut steak topped with feta cheese, sliced tomato, fresh Greek oregano and lemon garlic sauce. Served with potatoes & vegetables. The picture and the description do not do justice to the great food my guests and I enjoyed at Alexi's Grill in Phoenix, Wednesday. I also heard very favorable remarks about the trout (from a fly fisherman from Montana), salmon and rack of lamb. Add the key lime pie, tiramisu and cheesecake with strawberry sauce and you get the idea we were rolled like barrels out of there. I believe it's all our responsibilities to alert the masses about bad internet companies. I should have Googled the company! I ordered 4000 tradeshow postcards on May 18. I am a graphic designer so the cards were printable and I know Overnight Prints had no problem because I asked. They were printed Monday May 19, shipped May 20 supposedly. I paid for 3 day select and these won’t be delivered until sometime on the 27th. 9 DAYS!
After 3 hours on the phone, they refused to reprint the cards tonight and overnight them. I could pay to have them reprinted and overnighted and they would give me a 50% discount on the printing part only. Now that I read all the problems with Saturday delivery on the blogs, I know they were just blowing smoke up my skirt. (By the way, they may be a California company but they let slip that all the printing is done by another company in Louisville KY, UPS’s home and hub. They are simply middle men.) I talked to Elizabeth in Customer Service then her supervisor Michael. I believe that was his name.
I have used printers for 14 years and have never had such an unresponsive company. All he kept saying was that was not their policy and he couldn’t change the policy just for me. Stay away from them! Every company makes mistakes but the difference between a great company and a horrible one like Overnight Prints is how they handle the problem. And this company really blew it!

New Term in Our Lexicon - Eco-Elegance!

I just received a press release for a Eco-Elegance Wedding from British Columbia at The Rise. Bride Barb McKechnie and Groom Jeff Boschert planned a wedding using as many sustainable products as possible. It looks like a very pretty wedding. But a word of caution! Be careful of fads. A little background on me, I have a degree in not only Bio-Chemistry but also Environmental Biology from 30 years ago. I know, I know I am old, but with age comes some wisdom too. I have seen so many mistakes in the name of "The Environment" now called "Climate Change."

I was one of the first to think plastic bags were a bad idea in the grocery stores but we had to save the trees. We have now changed the term global warming into climate change because the earth actually cooled over the last few years. Scientists know that sunspot activity has more to do with the earth's temperature than anything man can do.

That doesn't mean the whole movement is a sham. We should be building and buying sustainable products. But a bamboo plate and fork in a plastic trash bag still fills up a landfill. So tread carefully. If you are buying recyclable products, make sure they are recycled. Send your extra food from your wedding to the local food bank or mission. Take the flowers to nursing homes (make sure you don't need to return the vase to the florist first). Instead of favors, make a charitable donation to a cause you believe in. And follow through. Make sure your wishes are going to be carried out. That's the true mission of environmental stewardship. Do what you can and see that it is done right. We can all make a difference, the smart way.

Enough of the bad news for a while! Some great news for a change. One of my favorite magazines is Bride and Bloom out of Torrance California. Imagine my surprise when reading an article about Wedding Videographers the names Darby Simon and Ande Martineau of My Wedding Film popped out at me. The article is about Hollywood style now becoming integral for wedding films. and Darby and Ande are some of the experts they quoted. Known for their cutting edge style, they taught me something new. Because Brides are used to watching television, the main wedding film is now kept under 25 minutes. Sure you can get the whole shebang and they give that to the Bride too. But the clever shorter production is what everyone else wants to see. I like it when our local artists are recognized for their expertise on a national platform. It makes me proud. Way to go girls, I am proud of you!

Bridal Couture Slammed by Arizona Republic

The Arizona Republic's investigative reporter Robert Anglen has finally exposed a bad seed in the wedding market here in the Valley of the Sun. Bridal Couture of Scottsdale has a worse record than I even imagined.

"Brides bash store: claim fraud, not couture

Some brides-to-be describe it as the bridal shop from hell.

Complaint records and interviews show that Bridal Couture and Evening Wear of Scottsdale has been accused of bait-and-switch tactics, luring customers with designer labels the store is not authorized to sell, cutting original tags off of wedding dresses, bouncing customer checks and refusing refunds.

“They sold me a dress and tried to switch it with one of their own,” said Erica Galietta, a 29-year-old Queen Creek resident who plans to be married in August. “The only reason I got my money back is because the attorney general's office got involved … I want to make sure no bride has to go through what I did.”

The shop's co-owner insists the allegations are untrue. He says customer service is first priority but some brides can be fickle and make impossible demands.

“We do a tremendous volume. Most of our advertising is word of mouth,” co-owner John Madonia said. “If those things were all true, how could we stay in business?”

Consumer protection and business Web sites show that Bridal Couture has racked up an extensive list of complaints from customers.

The Better Business Bureau of Phoenix gives Couture an “unsatisfactory” rating due to unanswered complaints. It shows 29 people have filed complaints against the store in the past three years, citing issues with contracts, billing, sales practices, product quality, customer service and refunds.

Of those, the BBB says the company resolved 10 complaints, failed to resolve two others and did not respond to nine.

Web sites such as Insiderpages.com and Citysearch.com, where local businesses are reviewed by customers, also show more than two dozen complaints about Bridal Couture, with warnings like: “Buyer beware,” “horrible experience” and “worst bridal store on the planet.”

Among the complaints is that the store only accepts cash or checks, so there is no way to dispute a purchase with a credit card company or cancel a charge.

Madonia said he doesn't believe all of the complaints are real and might have been posted by competitors. He said he recently hired a lawyer to look into the complaints and determine their veracity.

The Madonia family has been in the bridal business for 20 years and has several stores across the country. Madonia said Couture doesn't accept credit cards in order to keep overhead down at its new and expansive Indian Bend Road location.

He denied engaging in any deceptive practices and said his staff has “never once” tried to pass off a knockoff as a designer dress or trick a customer into buying something that they couldn't get.

Not so, according to Galietta. She said she put down a $600 deposit for a Paloma Blanco dress only to find out from the designer that Couture was not an authorized dealer, had no pending orders and would not be able to supply her with the dress she had a contract to buy.

Madonia had a different take. He said Galietta bought a dress that was modeled on a Blanco design but made by their in-house designer.

“There was never a day that this girl was told that this was a Paloma Blanca dress,” he said, adding that his own designer carries more cachet. “It would be like saying you are passing off a Rolls Royce as a Ford.”

Many Web complaints mirror Galietta's with claims that Couture sold one thing and delivered something else.

“We finally went to pick up our dresses only to see a nightmare alternative that they tried to force us to buy,” one woman wrote in a posting last year. “Turns out, our choice, that is still on display in the store, is a discontinued dress.”

The woman says Couture agreed to a refund, but never sent it. When her family went to the store, they found the doors locked with a sign saying entrance was by appointment only “due to security reasons.”

Galietta said when she demanded a refund, Couture owners threatened her with lawsuits that would cost her “thousands and thousands” of dollars.

“They said it was going to cost me big,” she says. “That's when I filed a complaint with the attorney general.”

Walter Nottleman, a volunteer for the Arizona Attorney General's consumer information and complaint division, confirmed that he helped Galietta get her money back.

“Apparently (the owner) promised her something he was not an authorized dealer for,” Nottleman said, adding that Couture promised a refund after several phone calls.

He said complaints filed against businesses are monitored by regulators looking for patterns. If any are detected, an investigation could follow.

Madonia contends the only pattern involves fickle brides-to-be.

"We will do whatever it takes to make the customer happy," he said. "Unfortunately, you can't please everybody."

Andrea's Winning Cake

Given 30 minutes to sketch her design after being told the theme of her "Mystery Cake Challenge", Andrea designed this adorable Baby Shower Cake (for J-Lo's twins maybe.) It stands over 3 feet high I think. She and her assistant, Jay were then given 8 hours to create this masterpiece. I will be interviewing Andrea more for the next issue of The Wedding Chronicle. I just wanted y'all to see the cake. I managed to set my alarm for a 2:00 am showing as I am a partial Luddite that doesn't TIVO and couldn't be home at a reasonable hour to watch it. I have found a simple, way to make your ring fit a little more snugly. I never knew I needed it until I found it! As someone with an up and down weight problem (and an allergy to cheap jewelry), my collection of rings varies not only by color and style but by SIZE. I have rings that one day are falling off my fingers and the next day I can't get them on. This new product from Luc-Co, Inc is a soft white plastic from a tube that you can use to size your rings for a better fit.

For Brides, why have the ring sized immediately especially if you are going to lose some weight before the wedding? This little $6.95 tube of wonder is available from

One of the blogs I read regularly is written by a local Phoenix area woman named Heather Bailey. I have never met her but I know and like her husband, Isaac Bailey a great wedding photographer. She is one of the coolest people I've never met. She is most famous for her fabrics. She designs them. Very high end event planners in New York and elsewhere have built entire receptions around her colorful designs and they have been shown on Martha Stewart and other impressive places. Her newest creations are these trash ties. As a minimalist, I adore the variety of understated looks you can get from her invention. And I am so glad she is a local girl!!!

9 Hot Winter Cocktails

OK, so we have had a couple of weeks of cold weather here in Arizona! I have lived in warm weather climes almost my whole life! To me, this is winter! When the weather is like this I like to wrap up, site around a firepit with friends and have a nice warm drink.

I just thought this grouping of unusual delightful cocktails from one of my favorite websites, www.FineLiving.com would be fun for a party, wedding or anytime. Nothing says "winter" like a hot drink spiced with liquor or liqueur.

Here are recipes for nine cocktails that will bring warmth to cold nights.

Hot Spiked Cider
Apply brandy gives this delicious cider its kick!

Hot Buttered Rum
This spice-heavy treat takes some work to create, but the effort is rewarded with formidable taste.

Cranberry Hot Toddies
Tangerines and whole cloves enhance the flavor of this cold-weather favorite.

Nutty Irishman

New Year - New Eyes

It’s a new year and a new chance to step back and change your perspective. So often I find I get caught in “my hamster wheel of survival” spinning that metal cylinder as fast as I can, wearing myself out and accomplishing very little. Even though I am busy, happy and tired at the end of the day, what have I accomplished?
Billie Jean King once said, “Never confuse movement with action.” This is a very wise statement for me to live by. Are you, as a bride, running your metal cage and demanding everyone to keep up with your hamster wheel? Are there so many details to keep track of and decisions to make that you are making yourself exhausted, accomplishing little or nothing? The new year offers you a chance to sit back and decide what kind of bride, person and spouse you really want to be. Categorize those things into areas of importance and act accordingly.
This is the beginning of your opportunities in life to challenge yourself with the unknown. After all, how many weddings have you really planned? Do you want to be stressed, unhappy with outcomes you can’t control and disappointed with those who don’t live up to your expectations? Why not change that paradigm and enjoy the adventure, appreciate the investment others are making in your future and be grateful for all the blessings you have in your life right now.
Next take some time to think about the most overlooked guests at your wedding. I was reminded just last night at a trunk show when I met a bride and her mother planning the final details of her big day. They seemed relaxed and truly satisfied with all the arrangements. When they told me of their venue choice, I asked if there were going to be any elderly guests as there is quite a walk from the parking lot to the ballroom. They quickly scanned their minds and thought of Grandpa Bill and maybe Great Grandma. The groom’s good friend just returned from Iraq on crutches. They realized they would have to come up with a solution to make these guests not only comfortable but special. I suggested they assign ushers to be their personal minders for the evening—assisting them with drinks and the buffet, plus to be available for transportation back to the hotel when they are ready to leave.
This is just another way of looking at the upcoming event. Change your perspective with the change of the calendar. You will definitely have a better year.

The BEST Chocolate Wedding Favors!

OK not only are they the best wedding favors, I have to say this company makes some of the best chocolate period. I have an expertise that allows me to say this. I am the granddaughter of a talented Greek candy maker. I was eating hand dipped chocolates with my baby food. A visit to his store was like a scene from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I was the kid who ate so much I blew up.
So that being my "street cred", I was introduced to Vosges Haut-Chocolat at a wedding I attended at Lake Tahoe. These truffles were the favors for each guest at the table. I had to eat one before the night was over. When that morsel from heaven entered my mouth, I knew I had to learn more about the complex flavors I had never tasted in chocolate before. This truffle combined ancho chillies, Ceylon cinnamon and dark chocolate to form a truly unique and enchanting experience. The Most Beautiful Chuppah

I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard "We wanted our wedding to be Simple and Elegant." With this picture I am setting the bar. This is what I call "Simple and Elegant." Ok it may not be so simple to construct and light but this is astounding. I found it in the current edition of my favorite magazine Inside Weddings from LA. I don't know who to credit for the design so I will include both the Consultant - Reva Nathan and Associates and the Florist- Ronsley Special Events. The photographer was KingenSmith Productions and the location was The Peninsula Chicago. Well done, well done.

The New Issue is Out!

I know I haven't been heard for a while but I have a great excuse. The new issue is on the news stands and in your favorite bridal salon! This was a fun issue.

All weddings are beautiful. Choosing the 25 most beautiful weddings was tough. Well, really beyond tough. With more than sixty entrants, we simply couldn’t make up our minds. So being the scientist that I am, I took an analytical approach. We sorted by photographer, then by venue, then by uniqueness. What followed is a gorgeous mélange of color, flowers, food and textures. I hope you enjoy the following twenty-six weddings. (See? We couldn’t even stick to twenty five.)

Our cover wedding was chosen the most beautiful. It is truly amazing what can be assembled for a private residence. We tip our hats to Amy Mancuso and her staff for creating such a beautiful environment. The Flower Studio, Tri-Rentals and Phyllis Lane should also receive special kudos for a job well done. This wedding looks like something from Martha Stewart Weddings or Inside Weddings. So keep your Preston Baileys and Colin Cowies. Our local wedding professionals can do anything they can do! And we can do it beautifully, right here without their help.

I just learned of a horrifying new trend. It appears that some bridal salons in the valley are offering wedding consulting as part of their services. This is not to be confused with the gracious salon employee who refers you some of her favorite vendors. No, this is an in-house person to help you plan your wedding. Be very careful. These salons have offered the job to anyone who says they plan weddings—with no knowledge of whether that person can do an effective job or not. Apparently, they plan to get kickbacks from every vendor they send to you.

A true wedding planner is a member of any number of organizations such as The Association of Bridal Consultants. She will possess a portfolio that will knock your socks off. These professionals offer ethics, style, and organization. They will not try to force you to use certain vendors of their choice. I am the biggest promoter of wedding planners in the valley. But do your homework and hire the best. There are plenty of great ones coordinators out there.

Designer, Designer Water

Since I seem to be on Bottles today, this one is available in stores today as opposed to a good idea in 1963!

The bottle at left is a limited edition Evian container created by Christian Lacroix. Evian makes a line of designer bottles every year to celebrate its commitment to "chic sophistication." If you want to spend between $5.99-$9.99 for a bottle of water, you'll find this one at high-end grocery stores and good restaurants.

But it's still a lot cheaper than that Oh So (pretentious) California potion Bling H2O.

Great Idea for Green Weddings!

In 1963, the geniuses at Heineken designed a beer bottle called the WOBO (World Bottle). Envisioned as "the Brick that Holds Beer" this bottle could be recycled directly into a brick for building.

These could be used for buildings that would be highly energy efficient and great to look at. Mr. Heineken's idea came after a trip to the islands as a solution to the waste disposal problems and the lack of affordable housing. The idea was too soon and nobody got behind it. In 1975 it was reintroduced again without much success. There is just one building in Holland created with these ingenious bottles.

With all the beer being consumed at weddings alone, isn't it time to retry this? The world is a lot more environmentally conscious than in 1975 when I was studying environmental biology.

Isn't this fun? With Black and White being such a fun and fanciful rage, I share this idea from Steve Kemble for a unique candy bar. There is always an opportunity for artistic expression. A recent wedding I attended had dalmation guppies swimming in bowls on the tables. I love unique uses of theme colors.

My name is Angie and I am the publisher of one of the largest Bridal Publications in Arizona. It is called the Wedding Chronicle and the website is www.WedAZ.com. I have been reading blogs for years now, mainly political blogs. When I found what some very creative photographers and wedding consultants are doing, I thought I should at least try. I see such wonderful things and read unique ideas in the stories brides send to me. I see fabulous things on the web as I am a googleaddict. (Is that a noun or a verb?)
